Port Overview

Muara is located on the easternmost tip of West Brunei. Muara Port was opened for commercial operations in February 1973. The Ports Department commissioned the commercial operations on 1 May 1974. The Royal Customs and Excise Department took over the management and operations of all ports on 1 January 1986. The Muara Container Terminal was operated by the PSA International (Singapore) until 1 April 2007. The Brunei Government took over the management and operations of the container terminal since then.

Latest Development News

Many parties handled the management and operations of the Muara Port over the years. In early 2017, Muara Port Company Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture company of Darussalam Assets Sdn Bhd and Beibu Gulf Holding(Hong Kong) Co.,Ltd., took over the operation of the terminal. The port is part of the Maritime Silk Road. This route runs from the Chinese coast to Singapore and the southern tip of India, west from India to Mombasa, Kenya, through the Red Sea via the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean, and then via Athens to the Upper Adriatic hub of Trieste, Italy, with its rail connections to Central Europe and the North Sea.

The Muara Port Company has unveiled ambitious plans to double the size and capacity of Brunei’s main container terminal by 2023. The company is finalising a master plan together with a team of international experts to provide a comprehensive roadmap for the port expansion. The main target of the master plan is to expand the main container terminal. The target start date of the construction of the new terminal is in 2nd quarter of 2022 with a projected completion date in 3rd quarter of 2023. This will be after a feasibility study targeted in Q4 of 2021, which will cover hydrology measurements, navigation simulations, a safety assessment and environmental impact assessment.

Due to its proximity to neighbouring country, East Malaysia, many companies use Miri, Malaysia as a transit point for their shipment to parts of Muara, Brunei by truck or road.
