Zanzibar, Tanzania
Port Overview
Zanzibar, Tanzania is one of the islands located in the Indian Ocean. The island is separated from the Tanzanian mainland by a channel. Zanzibar is built on a triangular-shaped peninsula. With this position, the port is thus protected from major weather elements. The spacious water roads and relatively deep water bed allows bigger ocean vessels to anchor. Hence, shipments can be loaded or offloaded to the island using lighters.
The activities at the port have been increasing over the last few years. However, the port rarely encounters congestion problems. Occasionally during the rainy season, the port operations can be affected. The average waiting time between arrival and berthing is 2 to 3 days.
There is no storage space within the perimeter of the port for bulk or break-bulk cargo. However, there are two port sheds that are used for the storage of imported motor vehicles. The quay for the imports of regional imports has limited space for the temporary storage of any items that are waiting for final clearances. Import containers are stripped in ‘stacks’ and the contents of the containers are loaded direct to road vehicles. These customs cleared items are then transported directly out of the port.
Empty containers are presently being stored in an open area which is approximately 50 metres from the Harbor entrance. The area is uneven and said to have a capacity for 2,000 TEU on a ground space of 26,400 m2. However the area is on open ground with no fencing or security thus not really suitable for the storage of laden containers.
