Port Overview

Tanjung Pelepas is one port in Malaysia, situated on the eastern mouth of the Pulai River in south-western Johor, Malaysia. This places the port in close proximity to the Strait of Malacca and Straits of Johor.

Tanjung Pelepas was officially launched in 2000 and handled 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units within 2 years of operations. Many carriers eventually shifted their transhipment operations to Tanjung Pelepas.

The port is well connected to roads and the freight railway system that extends from Johor to the south to southern Thailand to the north, via a 4-track rail terminal. Tanjung Pelepas has expansion plans to accommodate 30 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by 2030.

The port recorded an 8 per cent to 9 per cent expansion annually in 2019. The federal government is seeking to make Tanjung Pelepas Port a “major transshipment hub competing among the best in the world” in phases. The Malaysian government is easing regulations to make business at ports easier. The government is also encouraging digitisation to increase efficiency in a bid to make Malaysia more attractive as a shipping hub.
