Port Overview
Port of Dakar has a strategic position that gives it a sheltered harbor. It is now the third largest port in West Africa after the Port of Abidjan and the Port of Lagos It is also the ninth-largest port on the African continent.
The port has one of the largest deep-water seaports along the West African coast, allowing round-the-clock access to the port. The port is located at the extreme western point of Africa, at the crossroad of the major sea-lanes linking Europe to South America, makes it a natural port of call for shipping companies.

Today, the port of Dakar is a major financial center in the region. Shipping services into the landlocked countries of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso is available through the port of Dakar. The city of Bamako in Mali serves as the main transportation hub between Senegal and its neighbors. Bamako and Dakar are linked through a series of road, rail and river transportation.
There are plans in place to improve the equipment Dakar port as well as the construction of a second port in Bargny (about 30km south of Dakar) The new port has became necessary as Dakar’s port has reached its expansion capacity. Designing, funding, construction and management of the new container terminal of the upcoming port, which is predicted to be up to 1.5 million containers per year, had been finalized.
